How to approach driving lessons

The key to establishing good driving habits and awareness is to learn the correct techniques early. To build confidence, these skills need to be practiced and embedded. Queensland Transport and Main Roads (TMR) requires students under 25 years of age to log at least 100 hours of supervised driving prior to booking a test.

FAQs

How do I book a driving lesson?

You can call or email Mortons directly. Alternatively make an online booking by simply clicking on the ‘book here’ links via this website. This link will take you to the Mortons booking page, where as a new student, you will need to register or complete a quick sign in through Google or Facebook before continuing with your booking. You will be prompted to provide your mobile phone number. A code will then be sent to your phone to verify. Select your instructor, service type (e.g. 1.5 hrs lesson) and finally your preferred time. A text message will be sent to you 24 hours prior to the lesson to confirm.

What do I need to bring to my lessons?

On the day of your lesson your instructor will pick you up from the scheduled location. You must have your licence, phone or logbook with you so that you can record your lesson.

Do I accumulate triple time for lessons with an instructor?

Yes, hours driven with an accredited driving instructor accumulate at triple time for the first 10 hours. After 10 hours, lessons with an instructor accumulate at a one for one (1:1) hour basis.

How do I pay for each lesson?

Payment is made at the time of the lesson by cash, bank transfer or by a payWave device in the car (NB. Your instructor will let you know what they prefer).

How many lessons will I need?

Mortons recommend a few lessons early during the 100 logged hours to establish correct techniques. Once the basics are established, we can step back whilst you practice your driving craft with your supervising driver. We suggest refresher lessons as you conclude your hours and approach the test (around 60 to 70 hours). This will ensure no bad habits have crept in.

Do Mortons offer lesson packages?

Some students may need 3 lessons whilst others may need more. Our instructors tailor every lesson to student needs, so we charge a set rate per lesson to avoid you paying for more lessons than needed. Time poor families may lock in a regular booking to keep the hours ticking over in the log book.

How will I know if I am ready for my test?

As you are nearing your test date, your instructor may conduct a Mock Test to see how you perform under the pressure of scrutiny. This also enables our instructors to provide feedback and familiarise you with the test area. This process also provides a gauge for students and parents to determine the state of test readiness. We can provide a written report to clients and parents if requested. Your instructor is the best person to advise you on test booking options and confirm that your instructor and their vehicle will be available when required.

How do I book a TMR driving test?

There is always a large demand for tests. You can book your test prior to completing your 100 hours. You must submit your learner logbook for approval. This can take up to 2 weeks to process, so please ensure that the test date you book is at least 2 weeks after the date you submit the logbook.

NB. Please do not forget to press the ‘submit hours’ button on the TMR logbook App, as it does not submit automatically.

Can Mortons book my driving test for me?

Yes, we can assist with this; however, bulk booking spots are no longer issued to driving schools by TMR.

Can I use my own car for lessons and on test day?

Yes, this can be arranged. We ask that the owner of the vehicle sign a waiver form granting permission for the vehicle to be used for driving lessons and confirming that the vehicle is comprehensively insured.

What happens on test day?

On the day of your test your instuctor will pick you up 1 hour prior to the test. You must ensure that you have completed the online Hazard Perception Test (HPT). You will need:

  • licence

  • phone or logbook

  • Payment for both instructor and licence.
